AEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO optimises to rank a page in a list of search results a person clicks through. AEO optimises to be cited inside the single answer an AI engine writes instead of that list. SEO wins traffic; AEO wins the recommendation. Most businesses now need both, because buyers use both.

They are not rivals
Most AEO signals, clean structure, clear entities, genuinely useful content, also help SEO. The difference is the target: SEO chases a position in a list, AEO chases a place inside the answer. You can rank well and still be missing from every AI shortlist, because the engine reads your page differently from how a human skims it.
Which one you need
- Buyers cannot find you at all: you need both. Fix the traditional visibility and the AI citability together.
- You rank but AI ignores you: you have an AEO gap specifically. The traffic is there; the recommendation is not.
- Your market has moved to AI-first research: AEO stops being optional. The answer is now the shortlist.
A concrete example
Search 'hair transplant clinic in Bangkok' on Google and you get a page of links to scroll. Ask ChatGPT the same thing and you get a short answer that names two or three clinics. SEO decides who is in the list. AEO decides who gets named in the answer. Different games, same buyer.
